Reducing the Overwhelm of Digital Presence: 2 Mistakes to Avoid
As a business coach for creative event professionals, one of the biggest problems I hear from my clients is how overwhelming it is to manage social media. This is often referred to as your digital presence, and it goes a long way in showcasing your talent, building trust with future clients, and attracting the RIGHT clients for you.
Chances are, if you’re struggling with your digital presence, or if it just doesn’t feel right, you’re falling into the trap of one or both of these mistakes.
These are the two mistakes you’ll want to avoid in order to create a successful (and stress-free) social media presence:
Mistake #1: You’re trying to do it all
Ten years ago, social media was simply a place to stay in touch with family or share recent pictures of your life, more or less. At the time, it may have been hard to even imagine what social media has grown into and the power it has to affect your business.
I mention this because I want to stress the importance of taking your social media seriously, i.e., treating it like the business it is.
Do you really understand the numbers on the backend? Do you have analytics set up? Do you know when followers are most active? Do you know what kind of content your target audience likes? Do you even know WHO is your target audience?
For example, let’s say you’re a design-heavy event planner. Your perfect client is someone who loves design, who spends their free time poring over magazines like Architectural Digest or Dwell or Creative Review. But for some reason, you’re only attracting DIY couples.
The problem?… Your social media. It’s drawing in the wrong target audience because you don’t understand how to attract the right ones.
Chances are, you’re so busy that you’re just throwing everything out there and seeing what sticks. That’s no way to run a business.

Mistake #2 You’re Not Streamlining Your Social Media
Not all social media is created equal. Facebook and Twitter are more news-driven, with Facebook also having the ability to create events. Pinterest is more visual and focuses on planning inspiration, while Instagram is design and picture heavy. TikTok is all video, features the latest trends, and skews toward a younger demographic such as Gen Zers.
You might think it’s wise to be on ALL platforms, sharing content as far and wide as you can, but this often results in poorer quality content and less interaction. And what if you spend most of your time on Twitter, but your perfect client is actually on Pinterest?
Instead of spinning your wheels and trying to get content out on every channel, you need to streamline your social media. And streamlining your social media is ONLY possible when you know who your PERFECT client is and where they hang out. You need to know who you’re talking to and what it is you have to say.
